The thing to realize about running really obsolete software versions like .8.1.6 is that it is not likely to produce problems as long as you don't use features you haven't used before. This usually isn't a problem because you aren't doing new development there. In your case, it sounds like you are. That is just begging for trouble. Even if you get it to work, you are liable to uncover a new bug and Oracle isn't going to rush you a patch. Figure out a way to do your new development on 9.2 while you wait to upgrade.
