I would also suggest that you use a new oracle_home location if you are
using this machine to run
the RMAN backups on a different (TARGET) server. The RMAN executable
and the TARGET database have to be the same version.
I have RMAN executables under /home/oracle/9.2/bin and
/home/oracle/8.1.7.4/bin so I can use cron to run the RMAN scripts
against different versions of Oracle.

I always install new versions into a different ORAClE_HOME. The upgrade
is
pretty painless, all things considered. I'd suggest a good read of the
migration manual, and test your upgrade several times in a test
environment
before you actually fire it off. Also, of course, backup backup
backup.

Subject: UPgrade from 8163 to 9.2?????
Hi
I have couple of Databases runing on SUN E450 Solaris 5.7 with
Oracle8.1.6.3.
I'm planning to upgrade to 9.2. Wondering how risky is this process? If
someone have had such situation may share their experience. Please also
suggest what are precausion we need to take care of during migration.
Which one is safer, need to install Oracle9.2 into diffrent oracle
home
or
upgrade 8.1.6.3 to 8.1.7 and then 9.2
thanks
