Oracle-L: RE: How do I corrupt a raw datafile?

Thats precisely what I did. Logged in as Oracle.

Tried dd if=/dev/null of=/dev/vx/rdsk/.........../tools_01
cat sqlnet.log > /dev/vx/rdsk/.........../tools_01
echo "Mary has a little bambi" > /dev/vx/rdsk/.........../tools_01

All ran successfully. I see the timestamp on the raw volume change to current time. But the datafile is online. I can create tables on the tablespace (made of only this datafile). I can select on pre-existing tables. I can successfully do checkpoints. I can shutdown and startup, and receive no errors.

Either 9i is really robust and unbreakable, or I stay in Utopia.

After typing in all this, I used a file the same size as the datafile, and specifed the file name as the input file in the dd, and EUREKA!!! I now have a corrupted data file.

Did you try copying a junk file to it. dd if= of=

:) did not think corrupting something would be a problem.
