Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: Failure to compress archive logs over 100M
use gzip and see. Much better than compress. I never observed any problem.

I just started getting hundreds of the following messages:
/ora_archive/ptxor01/arch_log/ptxor01_1_17484.arc: -- file unchanged
It appears to only come from a failed attempt to compress an archive log
which is
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 104858112 Jul 3 04:07 ptxor01_1_17484.arc
over 100M in size
-rw-r----- 1 oracle dba 71110623 Jul 6 07:11 ptxor01_1_17544.arc.Z
logs under 100M compress just fine.
Using a -f switch with the compress will compress the log, but the compressed file is larger than the original file. I have not seen this behavior before from compress. Any ideas or thoughts would be appreciated. Regards,
