Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Backups to Tape?
I agree that, particualry in production, backup to disk is the way to go,
and then get those backup sets backed up. In development, it all depends on
the system, the cost and the SLA's. I guess my experience with MML is
somewhat more stable than yours is (using netbackup)... though the initial
stabilization of the infrastructure is a pain.
Thanks for your feedback!!

Robert,
I am a HUGE fan of RMAN to disk... since I dont want to retire early..
I have seen lots of inconsistencies with the MML to tape method ...I
know
it can work ...but you are more vunerable on your RESTORE/RECOVERIES...
IE.. We had an issue with the network duplex switch off so it took vast
times
to restore and a head ache to figure out... especially with vp's
breathing
down
your neck. All the network/and netcard problems come into play...
Then you have the Tape bot issues...contention issues... guy in the
backup
room
put a patch on the MML software...which did not affect the backup but
SCREWED us
on the recovery....(This actually happened one place I was at)
Hence...let me count the ways disk is better .... for safety.. So much
more
dependible
and quite fast...no fighting for tape bot arms...missing tapes(offsited
wrong..)
Easy put in multiple proactive systems without taxing the tape bot
system.
The list goes on and on.. Backup location goes bad... I just change
parameter
in script and wala... On disk I keep either full backups and/or
cumulative
incrementals to get back to a point in time for the SLA.
I fold the archivelogs happening during the backup into the backup
pieces to
reduce
the dependancy requiring the archivelogs during restore.
I backup to tape the backup pieces using the bread and butter standard
file
backup
of veritas/legato or tar or what ever is highly dependable and quick to
restore..
Pulling the backup pieces back does not depend on any database bottle
neck..
ok I know we are starting to talk extreme...but If I can take the safer
route I do.
To me the fewer technologies your backup/recovery is dependant on the
better
off you
are going to be. The few vunerabilities you are going to have. I'm
purposely
retentive
when it comes to recovery.. I seen alot of very strange things in
recovery...and so
I take every precaution available.
Cheers,
Brian Spears

I'm currently involved in a discussion about the virtues of backups to
disk
AND to tape of production databases. I'm for the idea, and there are
others
who are only wanting to backup to disk, and want to depend on our DR
server
for any other recovery requirement. I'm looking for your thoughts on
this
topic. Anyone want to contribute some good reasons to g ahead and backup
to
tape anyway?
