With tape backups, you have several added avenues for restoration/recovery. By keeping a history of tapes, you can return to any point in time within the retention period of the tapes. Just because the file copy completed without error does not mean you can read the files on disk. If your prod server and DR server are not physically separated, you run the risk of losing both of them and the db along with it. Tapes are much easier to remove and store offsite.
To me it is a small price to pay to have an additional version of your production backup. Ideally, you always recover from your DR server. However, having that additional line of recovery would be a job saver in case of a catastrophic failure or an unfortunate set of events.
