Joe,
I agree with this I just can't see why anyone would limit their recovery
options by omitting the online redo logs for the sake of saving a couple of
minutes of time saved.
As you've said, that's a case for careful recovery rather than 'partial'
backups.
I've always based my backups round giving myself as many options as possible.

I used to believe that(and still do most of the time), here is the catch.
if you need to restore lets say all of the datafiles because you lost all of the datafiles(but your control files and redo logs are intact), you just need to make sure to restore ONLY the parts you need, thats the simplest way to make sure you get a good setup for recovery. Restoring all of the control files and/or all of the redo logs will messup the chance to roll forward.
