Are you? I'm not. I don't presume that the database has been shutdown cleanly unless I've done it myself. For a while (version 6 I think) you HAD to do a shutdown abort as a shutdown immediate had the potential to corrupt the database.

If you are not in archivelog mode when you do the cold backup, you don't CARE about the current online redo logs. And if you've done a shutdown abort before the backup you NEED the redo logs from the time of the backup or you have to open resetlogs
And open resetlogs is a messy way of recreating your redo logs.
