Thanks, Stephane, for the plug. ;-)
The idea behind the paper was to show how to get data moved from one
database to another once the target schema was created. Some of it
addressed speeding up import: things you can do include setting the
target database to noarchivelog during the import, ensuring that your
redo logs are large and/or numerous enough to prevent log switches from
waiting on checkpoint creation, and, as you mentioned, setting
INDEXES=N.
