You are correct, of course.
My point is that the infrastructure cost is much higher than the cost of the disk drives alone. The last disk array I was involved in purchasing cost around $75K - $80K not including disks. It had 24 slots. That's over $3K per slot. The disks were a little more than $1K each. The slots cost about 3 times as much as the disk drives and that doesn't include the "soft" costs of installation, configuration, maintenance, etc.
I stand by my statement that disk drives are cheap but disk space is not so cheap.
