Names server is depreciated in 9i, but still there. They were going to remove it, but I think there was a bit of a backlash, so they have delayed
the removal.
OID (LDAP) is the replacement.

We use names server here, have found it to be pretty stable and reduced tnsnames.ora
administration nicely.
