i guess Jack is talking apples and oranges.try this ..
there are two types of backups .. logical and physical
.. exports are logical backups in that they do not
back up physical oracle db files..
on the other hand .. in physical backups .. u would
actually backup the control file and other files using
either rman hot or cold backups
