Contract rates are lower as well as permanent salaries and there is none of the 'extra job security' applied to contractors.
However I work close to home and the out of hours requirements are minimal, so I'm happy.
and the UK. I have pretty much upped my salary by about 225% since I left.

thank you for your replies... and yes, it's the same in Germany, Govt. jobs are paid poorly here, too.
