Thanks to all those who replied.
I found the problem and I would be happy and thankful if someone could = give me an explanation.
In addition to renaming file, I commented out the "mts_dispatchers" = parameter. This was the reason why it gave that error.=20
I am sorry to have U troubled.
Could someone give me an explanation as to why does it throw this error = message. Should it not establish a dedicated server connection. I am using NT with 816.

If this is 8i and on NT, there is a directory under Oracle home called =
database, there is an init file in there that points to the init.ora =
file in the pfile folder. If you don't change the name there it won't =
start.

Have you tried to start up using the pfile option?
SQL>startup pfile=3DPATH/init.ora=20
Are there any errors in the alert log, or any errors accompanying = this error? There should be more information in the error stack..=20
