If=20 this is 8i and on NT, there is a directory under Oracle home called = database,=20 there is an init file in there that points to the init.ora file in the = pfile=20 folder.  If you don't change the name there it won't=20 start.

Have you tried to start up using the = pfile=20 option?
 
SQL>startup pfile=3DPATH/init.ora=20

I created a database using DB=20 CreateAssistant. Then I went to the pfile where the init.ora is = placed. I=20 renamed the filename and after sometime renamed it back to = original. But=20 it seems like it is not taking/reading that file.
 
I get ORA-01078 failure = in processing=20 system
