its too tough to keep up ...

I just received an shrink-wrapped CD of PostgreSQL 7.0.3 from Great Bridge in today's mail. (Not that it really means anything - I'd rather get a fresh build from freshmeat.net) It is now sitting on top of a PC, directly on top of a SuSE 7.0 CD.

The Oracle 8.1.6.1.0 for Linux CD is now under the Oracle 8.1.7.0.0 for Linux EE CD.

they just have to make the jump into the CDROM tray ... the osmotic pressure of data on CDROM x the dielectric constant of air at sea level >>> that required for the data to be conducted straight onto the hard drive media ...

has anyone kicked the tires on 8.1.7 on NT yet?

Paul

anyone had a look into the internals of PostgreSQL and have any comments about it's expected performance vs Oracle for OLTP applications doing over
100 select/insert's per second ?

I've been reading their docs which are rather basic. I Haven't gotten down
to digging up more specific non-partisan info.

Specifically I'm interested in what makes PostgreSQL competitive, and whether Oracle's shared pool and tuning capabilities still have the advantage.

is there anyone out there who looks upon PostgreSQL favourably as an inexpensive alternative to Oracle?
