Kate,

Yes there is. I've got an instance (or whatever else you want to call it) running at home since it comes with Linux and I'm curious. Overall I rate as "not bad". It's not an Oracle that's for sure, but as a real alternative to SQL*Server it's much better in my book mainly since it is ANSI SQL compliant. I've not done much more than play around with it to the point that I can get real dangerous, so take this with a grain or truck load of salt. With a bit of luck I may get to work with it more in the near future as an alternative to Oracle's outrageous Internet cost for our customer service web apps.

anyone had a look into the internals of PostgreSQL and have any comments about it's expected performance vs Oracle for OLTP applications doing over 100 select/insert's per second ?

I've been reading their docs which are rather basic. I Haven't gotten down to digging up more specific non-partisan info.

Specifically I'm interested in what makes PostgreSQL competitive, and whether Oracle's shared pool and tuning capabilities still have the advantage.

is there anyone out there who looks upon PostgreSQL favourably as an inexpensive alternative to Oracle?
