Hi,

What is the error message your getting.
Databases on different machines??
Select * from global_name returns just the SID (nothing like SID.DOMAIN)

If the 8i is on a different machine it could be caused by the fact that in the tnsnames.ora on the 8i machine it uses service_name (?) instead of SID, which causes problems with NET80/SQL*Net2.x
