Couple of things off the top of my head:
1. Check the size of your listener.log file. Resize it to 0 by issuing the
following command at the Unix prompt:
# >listener.log
2. You're running some type NIS, DNS, etc that is unable to connect to the database initially and must manually locate the server. Hey, I know I don't make sense, I haven't had my coffee yet. ;)
