RMAN - Catalog database maintained at a central location shared

For RMAN, shared among many databases for backup and recovery. Oracle has recommended we maintain a separate database for RCAT.

With multiple databases scattered on various OPS clusters, we have to maintain a separate NODE with the RCAT database.

When this is done, is the backup maintained on the local (source) database cluster/machine or on the machine that houses RMAN/RCAT database?

I am trying to gather some info on how this is done at other sites.
