I would suggest that you use rman with a recovery catalog. You can build
one in a small database just for that purpose.
You do not have to issue and alter database.... command.
Sample scripts are in ORACLE_HOME/rdbms/demo/case1(2,3,4).
I use rman for all backup except cold backups done along with other stuff by our SA. If you would like anymore information contact me directly and I will be glad to help.
