Thanks Chuck and Ruth for your replies.
Chuck, I think you are answering the question about WHY this happened. It does
make sense to me, considering that bouncing the db cleared it all up.
Thanks again
Lisa

Subject: Re: Unix question
I assume you mean tables and not files. Oracle converts deleted tables to
temporary segments and them one of the background processes, SMON I
believe, is supposed to clean them up later. Sometimes it takes a while for
that to happen. I think Steve has something on his website about how to
post SMON to clean up immediately with an undocumented command. Check out
www.ixora.com.au. You might also try offlining and re-onlining the
tablespace(s) in question. I think this has the same effect.

I am spending a lovely Sunday afternoon working on rearranging wasted space
in
our largest database. I deleted a large number of files ~30 min ago and
the
space does not show up as free in df. Does it take a while for this to
happen?
If it's not going to free up the exact amount of space I am deleting in
database
files this is a waste of my time !!!
Thanks
Lisa
