I assume you mean tables and not files. Oracle converts deleted tables to temporary segments and them one of the background processes, SMON I believe, is supposed to clean them up later. Sometimes it takes a while for that to happen. I think Steve has something on his website about how to post SMON to clean up immediately with an undocumented command. Check out www.ixora.com.au. You might also try offlining and re-onlining the tablespace(s) in question. I think this has the same effect.

Solaris 2.6, using Veritas

I am spending a lovely Sunday afternoon working on rearranging wasted space in
our largest database. I deleted a large number of files ~30 min ago and the
space does not show up as free in df. Does it take a while for this to happen?
If it's not going to free up the exact amount of space I am deleting in database
files this is a waste of my time !!!
