Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> Re: Objects for OLE
Hello Deane,
I was considering the same sort of thing, converting an already existing Access application to sit on Oracle, using Oracle Objects for OLE. That was until I discussed it with Oracle. It seems that in particular, for Access, there is a large amount of work to be done, programming wise, in order to have the table/query handling. It was suggested that for Access/Oracle, you'd be better off looking at ODBC, due to the ease of data connection and the small amount of programming needed for standard data management tasks. (I think it was a different story for VB). Speed wise, it was said that it is obviously faster due to the direct ORacle calls OLE will do, but that unless the application is highly user intensive, that this might not be of that much benefit. I', now looking to use the Oracle7 native ODBC driver, and just effectively 'attach' the oracle tables to replace the Access ones. Hope this helps David Godfrey dgodfrey_at_continuum.co.nz ______________________________ Reply Separator _________________________________Subject: Objects for OLE
I am a Consultant for the Alabama Department of Transportation. The DOT is in the process of updating their database system. The proposed configuration is to run DB2 on the mainframe, with Oracle on the Server and Access on the PC level. We have been considering using ODBC, but Oracle Objects for OLE has been recommended as a possible alternative. Does anyone have any experience with Objects for OLE in this environment? I am particularly interested in finding a company and/or government agency within a 200-250 mile radius of Tuscaloosa, AL (this would basically include Mississippi, Georgia, Tennessee, Alabama, and the Florida panhandle).
Thank You,
