Distributed databases

Hi Everybody,

I am new to ORACLE. I have identified following as the advantages of distributed database systems :

i) Each database is controlled by its local DBMS. ii) Database corruption at a particular data site does not affect all the

    database users. (ie : Applications which may require the corrupted data     at some point may run for those logics which do not require the corrupted     data)

Please let me know about any other advantages (in brief) from your experiences. Sorry for this theoritical question, requiring actual experience.
