I've been doing HP-UX admin for about 5 years, and Oracle DBA stuff for about a year. I don't have any personal experience with your problem, but I always had the same impression about the lost+found directory that you did - that files ended up there if they became "lost" due to inode problems. I suppose there is some possibility of corruption if the file was open at the time,
 but I think that I would probably take that risk and go ahead and apply them.
