Default username/password with global db links

Has anyone that's using Oracle Names had success with using a default username/password with GLOBAL database links?

The global link works fine as created by default in Network Manager (no username/password). That is, if the account with the same username/password exists in both instances, it works.

We don't necessarily have identical accounts throughout all of our instances, however, so I want to create a "dummy" account in all of our instances with select any table privilege (no sensitive data at this time) and use that dummy account as the default username/password for the global link. When attempting to connect to a valid account on the 2nd instance (logged into an account on instance 1 that doesn't exist in instance 2) we get ORA-1017. Basically, it's not using the default username/password that was entered in Network Manager, which does exist in both instances.

Is there a way to get information about the global link, or is it only stored in that unreadable network definition file - <filename>.net When I re-open the network definition file in Network Manager, the default username/password I entered is there.

We're running Oracle V7.1.6 on an ATT 3000 V2.02
