Searching "LONGS"

Hello Oracle prophets:

I am using forms3 (key trigger) and need to search through LONGS to find certain  strings. Since LONGS cannot be used in the usual string functions, I am  considering various alternatives, such as loading the LONG into multiple CHAR  variables.

I have been unsuccessful thus far. Any ideas?
