The orainventory is so detailed, it can become a valuable assistance for automated patching. Not quite ready for real life yet, but getting close with 10g.

Besides, it is not there for you, other than it can be 'interrogated' using the OUI. It's there for the OUI and the patch system.

But - I sometimes think it's Oracle's way of competing with Microsoft's 'Registry'.
