Without digging too deeply, I strongly suggest that you export with direct=n and retry the import.

Direct mode export is faster, but it does not do NLS conversion between the exp and imp database (applies to 9i and downwards, haven't checked with 10g).

Never use direct=y. The export is faster, but not the import, and it takes usually a lot longer than the export. The benefit of direct=y is thus marginal, and the drawback you may have already experienced.
