I started as an accountant working with an Oracle-based application. I took some training classes to learn how to do SQL*Plus queries against the database, then moved on to Pro*C and PL/SQL as things got more complex. At that point I was hired into the IS unit. When a junior DBA position came up, I was offered the position. And I jumped at it. Right now I'm trying to learn as much as possible to jump from here to a mid-level or senior position here or somewhere else.

Try to find a position in or around Oracle and work at learning as much as you can about it. Sooner or later, if you've shown that you're capable, you'll get an opportunity to move to where you want to go. There are lots of opportunities out there.

Good luck!
