Mladen,

Thank you very much for your suggestion. I tried
exactly that - offline the tablespace and restore the
datafile and - guess what? - it failed because of the
lock being held against the datafile. That is what
lead me (and the Oracle support guy) to bounce the
database. Now I may be less than "half way competent
member of damanagement" (whatever it means), but
based on your advice you may be not much better. In
the future if you can't refrain from isults, please do
not reply  to my posts. I'm asking for help and
advice, not an insult.
