The META Group has released a study that forecasts increased demand for DBAs
in the future. They quote the U.S. Department of Labor's Bureau of Labor Statistics that forecasts a 66% increase in DBAs by 2010. The two factors
that META feels will increase demand are:

  1. Increased use of DW
  2. Aging workforce They estimate that by 2010, a quarter of the IT workforce will be over 55 years old. The new features to make databases self-managing will only help with lower value labor intensive tasks such as schema changes and performance tuning, not with higher value skills such as design and troubleshooting.
