I just checked, the certification matrix for Oracle on linux is

9.2 -- Red Hat AS/ES 2.1

9.1 -- Red Hat AS/ES 2.1

9.0 -- Red Hat AS/ES 2.1, Red Hat 7.1, 7.0

8i -- Red Hat AS/ES 2.1, Red Hat 7.1, 7.0, 6.2, 6.1, 6.0

If you make any changes to the binaries then Oracle will no longer support you.

We are just loading a copy of a production export to our newly setup RH9 - oracle9iR2 database.

We encountered same problems setting up Oracle 9i when we installed RH8.
