Peter
I think you are confusing 2 different methods of accessing non-oracle databases.
Heterogeneous Services (aka Generic Database ODBC) is the simples (and cheapest). It requires a 3rd party ODBC driver.
Transparent Gateway is the Oracle-Only Solution and should be the fastest. It is an extra-cost option ($15000 - $120000+)
we recently installed and configured Heterogeneous Services to connect to a SQL Server database from Oracle. It was quick to setup and more than fast enough for our needs. We used the DataDirect ODBC Driver.

We are looking at using heterogenous services on Oracle 8.1.7 to Sybase. It appears to me that the transparent gateway is all that is required. The confusion results from a test environment that was built by another DBA who installed the generic connectivity configuration which requires a separately purchased ODBC driver for Unix. This environment works.
The question is whether, or not, the ODBC driver is necessary for the transparent gateway configuration. The data and documentation say, 'no' but we have experience that says otherwise. Comments from anyone with hands on experience with the transparent gateway would be appreciated.
