Good article. A lot of truth. The fact is that both Oracle and Microsoft got where they are with aggressive sales and marketing tactics. I have often said that Bill Gates got to be the richest man on the planet by giving away more software than anyone else. He (and Larry) understood at an early stage that the risk of giving away software was small. Suppose a consultant comes into your company and creates an application, then leaves. He forgot to mention that he used a trial version of Oracle. Well, eventually the company will need support and will have to get legally licensed. A company
(certainly not a significant one) can't take the risk of having unlicensed
software. And then they won't be in a position to bargain with Oracle for the best price. On the other hand, suppose you want to learn how to be a DBA on your own time. Which database will you choose? The one with the least restrictive policy. If company A makes you buy a full production license and company B lets you freely download a trial copy, which will you choose? So company B may lose a few licensing dollars here and there at the start, but it may wind up with more trained professionals and more companies using its product.

Folks,

Does "Oracle Enterprise Edition - Trialware" have all the features as that of a licensed one ? Is RMAN fully functional on a trial version of 9iR2 ?

What makes the difference between these two ?

If there is no difference, how does ORACLE prevent people from using it for PRODUCTION ? Read an interesting article about oracle licensing at http://www.vnunet.com/Analysis/1113993
<http://www.vnunet.com/Analysis/1113993> and just thought of sharing it with u guys.

Share your comments Gurus.

Cheers,
Joe.
