Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Renaming tablespace by updating SYS.TS$
Been doing this before you got there? Welcome to the wonderful world of DBA
politics. If your boss got his/her promotion for this clever idea, then you
want to be diplomatic. You are correct that if it works now the company
won't want to spend thousands of dollars to replace it (the Shareplex
recommendation). On the other hand, if it breaks in the future, you could
end up with the blame, particularly if you didn't warn them it was
vulnerable.
First, I would get the lay of the land. Find out how much emotional investment the company has in this method. Whose idea was it? I think the replies today have given you some suggestions of the vulnerabilities. Then you may want to consider a note to your management outlining the issues and, if possible, suggest some alternatives. Whether they decide to act on your suggestions isn't in your control.

We are doing this to make our transportable tablespace process simpler. We import the transported tablespace. Drop the old one. Rename the new one.
Anyone else do this? Any pitfuls other than the shock and awe of us touching TS$? I know its not supported.
For those of you who hate this idea, they've been doing it since before I
got here. Just looking for outside opinions on this.
