What Subs were you on,
I was on the SSBN 618 Thomas Jefferson Gold Crew,
from 1970-1974.
Did 1 patrol driving myself,
and then shifted into the Missile Fire Control spot.
Actually got to fire 1 Missile on the Atlantic test range.

When I was driving submarines for a living I required TS, Crypto and SI (above TS) clearances. The SI was good for only six months. Didn't have to take a lie detector test or have my hand writing looked at.

> Things may have changed, but Confidential clearances used to granted on
nothing more than a local records check. Secret clearances on a national
one. Interviews used to not start until you were put in for Top Secret.
If the job requires compartmented access than the investigation is more
thorough, more interviews are done etc, for a while lie detector tests were
pretty common and even such nonsense as analyzing handwriting.

> If a company REALLY wants you, they can ask for an expedited security
clearance, which only takes a couple of weeks. However, that is more likely
to be the case when you are already working for the company and they simply
want you to be assigned to another job that requires a clearance. Also, the
fact that you previously had a clearance will help. The feds will not
re-contact all the contacts from the prior part of your life that they
already investigated. Mostly, they will concentrate on contacts since the
clearance expired.
>
> BTW, I have been a contact for one friend who got a clearance, and had a
really interesting interview with an FBI agent. I'm now scheduled for an
interview for another friend, who is getting an expedited clearance. In the
first case, it was actually a few months from the time my friend told me she
gave them my name to the time I was contacted. In the second case, it was
two days.

> There are a lot of prime job openings that I am interested but they
require a Security Clearance. If I have a job that provided the security
clearance I am all set....But if I do not need one now and do not have one
now, How do I get one to be able to apply for the job opening? I have had a
T-S Crypto clearance in the past but it has expired and I would like to get
a clearance reinstated again. What steps are required for an individual to
get a clearance but not currently have a job that requires it?
>
> It sounds like catch-22 to me . You need the clearance to get the job but
need the job to get the clearance. Ron
