RE: Oracle 10Patrice,
This is not entirely true. The web server host could in fact be a third tier to the client / database (just like Apps Server).. The web server just needs to have access to the database server on the specified port - and have the proper Oracle connectivity built in to it for SQL*Net/Net8 connectivity..
The person using the "tool" has to be able to connect to the "web server", whether that be via a true "web interface", or server actively connected to the internet (haha yea, loads of people do that!), or more commonly via VPN, or RAS connections and joining the network (with extra layers of encryption, SecurID etc.)..
This is how *I* would recommend any "browser based" tool be run anyway - personally..
Granted, the initial "knee-jerk" reaction to "web based management tools" is to put your tongue between your teeth, bite down, and draw in a sharp breath - but with a little thought (and maybe a chat with your security guys) you really can come up with a viable, secure solution..
This of course has nothing to do with automatic patching.. WOW! ;)

Another drawback (don't know if there is a workaround) is that to let people administer Oracle via a browser... you have to run a web server on the host the database is on.
We try not to do that, are we the only ones?
Patrice.

Actually I think what they showed is really going to be part of OEM4. My understanding is that the 1st release will be out in the coming weeks with a .1 release ( with functionality like a pocketpc version) to be out in q3/4 timeframe. Oracle 10( or whatever its called ) will be unveiled at Oracle(Open)World in September.

The kid that demo-ed it would have been more impressive if he had once showed the audience the cool toy, rather than the VP the cool toy.

One more check-mark in the list of things the DBAs do today, that can be taken away from them :)
But my little brain kept wondering...... ..... as to why would Oracle come up with this wonderful feature? Why can't they use such brilliant Developers to concentrate on thoroughly testing their code so it does not need a lot of patchwork. Patching should be an exception, not a routine procedure that needs automation !!
BTW.. The new release may not be called 10i, after all.
Did find out that it will automatically download and install all patches and OEM will allow it to be scheduled so that you don't actually have to do anything. I think the boy who demoed that said it was a wonderful new feature.
