Hmm, Oracle 10 and Star Trek mentioned in the same message...

Perhaps I should start the rumour that SYSDATE will be replaced by STARDATE in Oracle 10? What other rumours have people heard?

Cheers,

     Mark.

Calling oracle support would be too cruel of a test, even for such a battle hardened crew as was the one of the star ship Enterprise. I can only hope that in Oracle 10, they'll add some consistency to RMAN catalog handling commands. For instance, I can do

allocate channel for maintenance type 'SBT_TAPE'; delete expired backups of database before 'SYSDATE - 21'; (3 weeks)

but when trying
delete expired backups of archivelog, I have to use "UNTIL" instead of "BEFORE".
Why can't I use the same qualifier for the same thing? It would probably be too
easy, don't you think?

Also, slight distinction between "EXPIRED" backups and "OBSOLETE" backups is
not immediately obvious.

As I recall, more than one Star Trek eppisode was based on the fact that the
transporter was getting ORA-600's and 7445's...

Oracle 10? Beam me up Scottie? I surely hope that transporters of the future
will not be running oracle. Can you imagine something like:

ORA-07445: Error while transporting. Get born again and repeat the transport.

We will be inundated by marketing materials. Bugs we will have to discover
ourselves.

This link says that we can hear abt the features of Oracle 10 (not 10i) in Sep/Oct 2003 issue of Oracle Magazine.

Just an observation.
