Thanks for the response. I myself never had problems but as I delved further it may well be that previously the pipe was being called /tmp/pipe. This was then able to be read/cat'd/pg'd or more'd etc... by any one who fancied a look causing the thing to fall over. At least thats what it looked like happened. Pipe is now given a unique name in a safe directory, given relevant permissions via mkfifo and we will see how that goes.
