Datafiles are exetended in the same filesytem they currently exist in

I am also concerned about the 'autoextend' feature. I prefer more control over my databases.
I was always unsure if the database would know which filesystem to use for the datafile. I mean, where would it extend it to?
The manuals never give details.
Thanks
Gillian
