Home -> Community -> Mailing Lists -> Oracle-L -> RE: Sr. Oracle DBA Needed in Ft. Lauderdale, FL... The DUAL table
I don't think it was a "bug" really. It wasn't a pseudo table back then; it
was the realy thing and you could actually insert rows with any char value
you wanted. Dual had no primary key constraint. If you did an import you
would actually insert a second row into the table. If dual had more than one
row it was really a "user error."
IMHO,
Steve Orr

Yeah, I think it was actually a bug! But I do remember getting two rows back at some version of 6. Since I was just starting out in Oracle, I figured at the time that was why the pseudo-table was called dual, and I was mighty surprised when the second row went away!
Then again, I guess it could just be a hallucination -- since I've been doing this for 8 years now. ;-)

Are you sure ?
I'm the kind of sad puppy that still has all my sql*plus documentation for
v6
(and forms3 and reportwriter etc etc )
and I cannot recall dual ever coming back with two rows

I do remember DUAL at one point (in version 6?) actually returned two rows.

Then, IF statements and looping capabilities were added to UFI (User Friendly Interface), and the name was changed to AFI (Advanced Friendly Interface). But alas, the AFI functionality was released as PL/SQL. However, the AFI name lives on -- where? ... The temp file created when using SQL*Plus edit command. This file also reflects Oracle's early VMS ties. AFIEDT.BUF. (EDT is the default editor in VAX/VMS).
history lesson for the day.

I started with 4.1.0 in 1983.... Been working with Oracle in the last 4-5 jobs. Still like it.
My largest area is keeping it running smooth and fast and database trending, but I've pretty much done it all.
Started IT, then EDP... in 1971... :-P

8 years of experience... and I'd like a new Mercedes on a silver platter too, please...
Seems to me after 8 years Oracle may become boring and something else may be more interesting. Anyone been there/done that?
