I'll go to my grave insisting that it's not the years of experience that
count the most (though it is important), but what you do during that time
that matters. I've worked with people w/ 2 years experience who knew FAR
more than some with 5-10 simply because they took full advantage of their
opportunities and truly LEARNED. Certainly not applicable to everyone I
know, but I feel you have to look at more than just "x # years of
experience".
Simply counting years doth not a good DBA (or anything else for that matter)
make....

Doesn't apply if you get in from a buddy who is good friends with the hiring manager and trusts the buddy's judgement ...

Most lies - er, fudges !! - can easily be ferreted out simply by asking the
right questions during a technical interview and requesting references from
previous employers. Some candidates I have interviewed put "performed
database tuning on various databases" - or words to that effect - in their
resumes, but were unable to elaborate or provide specific details when
pressed for more information, sure sign of garnishing !! Not providing
references from previous employers is the quickest way to *not* get a DBA
job around here !

It's amazing how many people I've interviewed in the last month that claim
'expert' or 'advanced' skills and yet can't answer the simplest questions
about PL/SQL. Wow. And the scary part is those people could still be
hired
as junior developers. WOW.... I could NEVER lie on my resume like that
and
oversell myself into a job. I'm not a good liar. I had no idea that
resume fudging was so RAMPANT.

It's funny how people can claim so many years of experience that don't
quite
add up. We have a guy here who claims to have over 10 years of software
development experience (involving Oracle) and flaunts it. He's barely past
30 and graduated from college with an accounting degree and worked as an
accountant for 6 years after that. At most he probably has half that. You
figure it out for yourself.

LOL...
In my previous job our Damagement hired a guy as my boss (in later part of
1995) who claimed to have had worked in UNIX and Oracle environment for
over
22 years...
He was subsequently fired in Jan 1996.. I still wonder why ;-)
