For an amazon startup - it's difficult to say. If you are serving lots
of
pages, with not many transactions and much to worry about
with transactions, then go for MySQL.
If you need a serious database with heavy duty usage, I wouldn't go for MySQL.
For free-to-use open-source databases, I would look at PostgreSQL or Firebird.

Oracle's pricing model varies - basically, they try and pull you in for the long term - even if you pay for a perpetual licence, you wont' get support on that unless you pay for a maintenance contract.
Mind you, you won't get commercial support for anything without paying.
What is your current skillset? Does your team (and I'm assuming team because you mention an amazon scale app!) have MySQL or Oracle expertise?
