An opinion which your colleague is unable to argue should be disregarded as a possible hoax, joke or mere superstition. Oracle has always used the 1st form and it's still the standard form for Oracle users. Look at any patchset's buglist and search for "ANSI Joins". There are quite a few of them. ANSI joins make queries harder to understand and optimize. I am not a neutral observer, I usually eliminate ANSI joins wherever I can. I hate @#$%! ANSI joins.
