All exceptions (and other errors) have negative numbers;
all of them are reserved for use by Oracle, except the
- -20000 ~ -20999 range - there are called 'user defined exceptions'
The -1234 you were using in an earlier example is a redefinition of an existing error - possible, allowed, but be careful: you might attach a completely different text (and thus understanding by the operator) to the original error.
If it's not something predefined, use the range above. And it's quite common to misuse the -20000 over and over, with different text.
