Disk? What disk? The operating system writes to a RAM cache on the filer head which writes to a stripe running across multiple physical drives based on a mathematical algorithm that is likely proprietary and may involve LUNS, volumes, QTrees, and other logical partitions that depend on who's disk array you bought and which version of their operating system is running the show.

Nobody writes to a physical disk any more. <g>
