Thanks for all the replies guys much appreciated and working on them.
Just to recap that all that init.ora, tspaces, sga etc. are identical because they were created from identical scripts.
As a further test I exported the schema from the slow db and then reimported the largest table into another schemas on the same db. This was equally slow and maybe I can assume that because it was using its own export dump for imorting purposes that this could remove the issue with possible encoding overheads.
Queries seem to run just as quick on the server and schema exports are very quick - just the imports that are an issue.
Still working on the unix config side but so far nothing bhas show up.
