Ah - now that is a change in scenario!

OK - I'll take you up on that one - your server is lost due to the raging, blazing firestorm. So is your diskfarm. Luckely, I have my RMAN backup stored off-site. You were as wise as me - your export dumps are also off-site.
What I will do, after the new hardware is installed:
* Install the Oracle software * Fire up RMAN * issue the restore command * issue the recover command until I think it's 22:45 again. * open the database.
What will you do?
You do not have a backup you can restore - you have a file in which you dumped data.
I have a backup of the database, you do not. You have data.
And that is all you have.

Thank you, Roger. Turned 50. Still willing.

Correct - in your scenario, you export some data. That is sufficient for your environment, and it will work in many environments. It is a valid addition to making copies of file systems, running RMAN, or home brew scripts.
But please, do not call that export "a backup". It is only "a" "backup" - feel the difference? The latter is a scenario. Sigh - English is not my native tongue, I cannot explain the subtle difference.
Top-posting is one way to shut me up...
